Connected monitoring
IoT air quality monitoring — connected sensors, cloud platforms, scalable estates
IoT air quality monitoring is what makes single-site instruments into a portfolio-scale capability. Wireless sensors, secure connectivity and cloud platforms turn raw data into ongoing operational intelligence.

Capabilities
What an IoT monitoring platform brings
Remote access
Live and historical data accessible from any authenticated device, anywhere.
Device management
Centralised firmware updates, calibration coefficients and configuration push.
Alerts
Threshold breaches escalated by email, Teams, Slack or ticketing integration.

Scalability
Add buildings, zones or sensors without rebuilding the platform.

Connectivity
Choosing how sensors talk to the platform
LoRaWAN is well suited to multi-storey buildings and campuses. Battery sensors can run for years with minimal infrastructure beyond a small number of gateways.
Wi-Fi works where enterprise wireless is already universal. It removes the gateway question but consumes more power and requires careful network and authentication management.
Cellular is the right answer for isolated assets, remote sites or short-term deployments where no local network exists. Modern low-power 4G modules now make this viable at sensor scale.
Comparison
Connectivity options at a glance
| Option | Range | Power profile | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| LoRaWAN | Hundreds of metres in-building | Years on battery | Estates, campuses, retrofit |
| Wi-Fi | Per access point | Mains-powered or short battery | Offices with strong wireless |
| Cellular (LTE-M / NB-IoT) | National coverage | Months to years | Single assets, remote sites |
| Wired (PoE) | Per cable run | Mains | New-build, refurbishment |
Practical notes
What to insist on
Encrypted transport
TLS between device and platform; mutual authentication where supported.
Data export
Open APIs and exportable raw data so the platform cannot lock the estate in.
Documented residency
Clear statements on where data is stored and processed, and which third parties touch it.
